We've Set Sail and found our first TREASURE ⛵️ πŸ₯³

Ahoy, mateys! 🌊🏴‍☠️ We’ve set sail, and the wind's are in our favor ~  our grand adventure is officially underway.

With needle and yarn as our compass, we’re charting a course toward treasures that can be held, hugged, and handed down. 🧢πŸͺ

What be our first discovery, you ask? None other than this Mini Boho Granny American Flag a charming heirloom design that waves with timeless beauty. This tiny treasure carries the spirit of freedom, stitched square by square, stitch by stitch, and it’s waiting to be recreated by your own hands.

With the replicating power of patterns, you too can bring this flag to life ~ a small treasure mighty in meaning.

Whether you make it to display, gift, or cherish, this little flag will stand as a symbol of creativity, tradition, and the adventures that lie ahead.

⚓️ The voyage has only just begun. Stay tuned, sailors ~ more treasures await on the horizon.

Follow this link ahead to dig up more treasures; Doily Designs Etsy

And yet another to follow us along the shores of SubStack.

Thank you for stopping by.

Best wishes, happy sailing, and happy crocheting!

Doily Designs Setting Sail

Doily Designs Sets Sail

Doily Designs is beginning a new, unique adventure on SubStack

In these shifting seas of creativity, I find myself riding the wild currents of change, perched atop a beast of burden in this vast and unpredictable market. The waters are teeming with fierce and talented makers—each vying for their own glimmering treasures. Yet I hoist my flag with pride, setting my sights on heirloom troves and hidden knowledge, ready to carve out my own place among them.

This voyage won’t be easy. The world of crochet design is full of competition, and every new stitch feels like a battle won. But with hook in hand, imagination as compass, and courage as crew, I press forward—charting a course through storm and sunshine alike.

Why Set Sail Now?

The seas of handmade design are more crowded than ever. There are countless brilliant crafters, each offering their own patterns, techniques, and treasures. It would be easy to feel swallowed by the waves.

But every sailor knows: the sea is vast enough for many ships. My work—my doilies, shawls, ponchos, and playful creations—isn’t just about patterns. It’s about story, memory, and the joy of turning a ball of yarn into something timeless.

This Substack is my logbook, my captain’s journal, a place to share the maps I draw (patterns), the ports I visit (projects), and the treasures I uncover along the way (tips, inspiration, maybe even a few secrets).

What You’ll Find Here

  • Patterns & Projects: Some free, some exclusive—woven with care.

  • Behind the Scenes: The design process, the challenges, and the triumphs.

  • Treasure Maps: Tutorials, tips, and heirloom wisdom passed down through stitches.

  • Adventure & Storytelling: Crochet is more than loops of yarn—it’s a journey worth telling in tales of storm and sparkle.

The Pirate Spirit of Making

To crochet is to be part pirate, part poet. We take humble string and steal back time from the endless rush of life. We craft beauty from chaos, treasure from the ordinary. And yes, in a market where competition is fierce and the winds are unpredictable, we need that pirate’s daring spirit to survive and thrive.

I may not have a ship’s wheel or a parrot on my shoulder (though a crochet hook tucked behind the ear feels close enough), but I do have the same hunger for discovery, the same stubborn spark to chase after what’s just beyond the horizon.

So come aboard. Grab your yarn, sharpen your hooks, and sail with me into this adventure. The seas are wide, the competition fierce, and the treasures endless. Together, we’ll stitch our own legends.

Fair winds,
Cathleen of Doily Designs πŸͺ (a.k.a. Captain Blacklace Doily 🧢

Texas Pillows

 Yup, that's right y'all, more Texas  πŸ˜Š

This is the team up of Texas Pillowcase and Texas Heart Pillow πŸ˜      I πŸ’ Texas

The ease in which the pillowcase's go on and off, and fit different pillows, honestly is leaving me a little giddy. :)

You probably can't tell from the photos, but the 'faux wood' is actually the perfect touch, framing this crochet Texas flag, giving it a rustic, classic Texas look.

The Texas Pillowcase Pattern or Texas Pillowcase Pattern has multiple options for trim or no trim, as well as places to continue, if you would like to have more crochet fun, or places to stop if you are happy with your results without trim. Texas Heart Pillow Pattern can also be made trim or no trim, and all sizes can be bought together, or found sold separately in Doily Designs Etsy shop.

Crochet Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie, or Blue Willow China is such an eye catcher, that when in 2011, a customer requested I crochet her Mom a blanket to match her Blue Willow China collection, I was beside myself with excitement.

I do not think I knew, until then that Hobby Lobby had such a great assortment of colors! There were so many blues to choice from.

We collaborated on the color scheme and her Moms blanket was finished just in time for her Christmas SURPRISE! <3

It is crochet projects like this that bring me so much crochet JOY, with the fun new Blue Willow China crochet, HAPPY MOMs and HAPPY DAUGHTERs, a very Merry Christmas'.

Happy Holidays!

Instagram Flashback

Doily Designs Instagram Flashback

2011, My husband, and oldest daughter talked me into getting the Instagram app on my phone, and it was a blast sharing with my oldest daughter.

Instagram was also one of the first places I started sharing my crochet. Etsy was were I ended up finding most of my clients, so I found myself not using Instagram very much for many years.

For me, it was not until the integration of mobile and desktop happened, around 2020, that I began to use Instagram once again. I remain somewhat of a minimal user, for whatever reason.

Since the Doily Designs Instagram only goes back to 2018, I started looking back at all the missed years, and having flashbacks.

Now that you are caught up πŸ˜… back to why we are here, a walk down Doily Designs Instagram lane....

Doily Designs Instagram Flashback

2011 -2014

The rustic photos go with the theme.  It starts with a snapshot of some of the first posts that I ever made on Instagram, obviously it was around Autumn. We just Love Fall.

The spiderweb, blue & black shawls, and the willow blanket, are made by me, but were not written by Doily Designs. As Doily Designs, I designed the rugs, earrings, a doily or 2, and the square blankets.

One more, and I will stop, this was my favorite, but it only ever got one like, so I never made it again, and that was that. They were my own designs, but they were square, and I was all about the circles at the time, if you didn't notice. But hey, squares the new round. πŸ˜…

 Doily Designs

In 2011, I began crocheting in the round and was hooked. ∞ Crocheting itself is very therapeutic and meditative and in the round is the cherry on top. Round and round, row after row, coming full circle. It is so very satisfying. In the round offers so much inspiration, there are endless possibilities of things to make. After making one doily like design after another, like the ones below, the name Doily Designs was born.

A few of my Doily Designs~
