Thoughts on AI Crochet

AI Crochet, Good or Bad?

Firstly, saying AI crochet is bad, is not really all there is to it, but it is definitely not pleasant to feel duped. 

As a crocheter, and crochet designer, I like the AI generated crochet, and I like that it sparks ideas, and creativity.

Probably not news to most of you, but we were duped.  

Granny did not crochet around her car, although how cool would that be. 😎

Imagines like this, and other unrealistic crochet, have been filling the internet, from small pillow designs to a life size Elephants, and they can, at first glance, fool even a crocheters eye.

Finding out repeatedly, one design after another, that it is not real, but is instead AI generated crochet, there are the thoughts of disappointment, feelings of naivety, of dismay, more disappointment, and the repeated annoyance of sometimes having to spend time to figure out if it is ai or not.

But AI crochet also leaves feelings of awe, wonder, and of What if's!

And I will say again, As a crocheter, and crochet designer, I like the AI generated crochet, and I like that it sparks ideas, and creativity. 

The down side is that some of it is undoable, and unrealistic to expect in real life, leaving expectations unable to be met and fulfilled by real life people. 

But we are realistic folks, right, we know the difference? Or do we? 

Like I said, I was duped, and I crochet and still did not always, automatically see the difference, unless it was crazy obvious like below, sometimes even then.

What it did do is it gave me, and other crocheters the same feelings and desires, and left us wanting to make one 😅

The crochet Giant Octopus is a perfect example.

It is gorgeous, and even though I am not a huge octopus fan, I wanted to make one.  

And, Well, so did a lot of other crocheters, and we now have so many great patterns for crochet octopus'.

Not so horrible after all.

We do always circle back around to that it is mostly undoable. There are a lot of really cute octopus, but none compare to or can achieve the exact unreal designs generated by AI.

These days, more and more, we are either seeing AI crochet, or hearing or reading someone talking about AI, and ChatGPT crochet, etc.....  And even though I know the AI crochet images are out there, they can still get me with an AI design here and there, along with wishful thinking.

This adorable, majestic roaster is what got me thinking about it again.  Looking at the stitches, I could see something was off, but he was just so colorful, and cute, I wanted to make one, but he was too perfect to be real. After an extensive search in vain for a pattern to prove he could be real..... It is true, he is AI.

Crochet Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie, or Blue Willow China is such an eye catcher, that when in 2011, a customer requested I crochet her Mom a blanket to match her Blue Willow China collection, I was beside myself with excitement.

I do not think I knew, until then that Hobby Lobby had such a great assortment of colors! There were so many blues to choice from.

We collaborated on the color scheme and her Moms blanket was finished just in time for her Christmas SURPRISE! <3

It is crochet projects like this that bring me so much crochet JOY, with the fun new Blue Willow China crochet, HAPPY MOMs and HAPPY DAUGHTERs, a very Merry Christmas'.

Dye Lot Discussion

Choosing yarn in the same dye lot can be crucial to a fabulous crochet project. Below is a great example of why to purchase your yarn in the same dye lot when crocheting, especial for larger, solid color items. 

Below I had crocheted exclusively indoors, with low light, and never checked the dye lot, and imagine my surprise when I went outside to take photos and this is what I shot. I was very disappointed, when I was expecting to see one solid color, and saw this. So you can see how the over all design of your finished item can be affected.

Since this experience, it has been imperative to some of my designs to check the dye lot # on each yarn skein, and make sure they are the same dye lot #'s. Otherwise, you could end up with all your time and work put into something, only to finish and realize this costly mistake. 

Even knowing this, it can be difficult, if not impossible at times, to get yarn all in the same dye lot. This is when I would suggest, do not 'try it anyway', as I did with yes, a second blanket, when I could not find any other option. As an alternative to trying it any way, you can usually purchase yarn online from larger distributor, and get batches of yarn from the same dye lot.

I recommend Hobby Lobby, "I love this yarn!", for their great colors and soft texture. As well as that they have consistently sent batches in bundles, all with matching dye lot #'s! Hooray!!

October Crochet Memories

This October has been so busy, sadly there has been little time for crochet. But it is very heart warming to visit relatives and see crochet that you have gifted in use. And since she has saved things through the years, it is fun to see the difference in style and skill.  Below are Sunflower Doilies gifted to my MIL. The one with black is from 2017, and the front 2 are 2021.

September Art Bug

As we journey into September, 2023, it has been especially fun doing a painting a day, 7 paintings in 7 days, painting along with this special lady Michelle the Painter, of Berkshire Paint and Sip. 

Below you can see paintings done following along with Michelle, and how her Fall spirit is in full swing, with paintings like 'Ghost in the Rain' and 'Haunted House', plus many more that you will find on her Youtube channel.

Michelle does a wonderful job guiding you through her lovely paintings, as you create something unexpected and fabulous.  Her reassurance and smooth flow, keep you going and assured it is for fun, and to not take it too seriously. In the end, I am always pleased with how it has all come together, following Michelle's simple steps.

One of the most challenging for me, yet also my favorite, was the 'Beach Crab'. My little lopsided crab brings me much joy.
