Level: Easy
Yarn: Small amount of worsted weight yarn.  (Note: Try different hooks and yarns for variety. Please see above pictures for ideas of different hooks and yarns that could work.)
Hook: Size L (11-8mm).
Measures: approx. 13 inches across using L hook. (J hook measures approx. 11 in.)
Gauge: 12 x 6 Dc = 4 inches, gauge not crucial

Stitch Key:
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single crochet
Dc = Double crochet
Sl st = Slip stitch
lp = loop
pic = picot
st = stitch
sp = space
beg = beginning

Special stitches:
V stitches/Vst = groups of (Dc, Ch sp, Dc) in same space.
Shell/Sh = groups of (2 Dc, Ch sp, 2 Dc) in same space.
Picot/Pic = Ch 2, Sc in 2nd Ch from the hook, continue as instructed.

Begin with *magic ring, (see end of pattern for magic ring instructions).

Row 1: Ch 3 = Dc, 19 Dc in lp, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 3. (20 Dc)

Row 2: Ch 4 = Dc + Ch 1, (Dc, Ch 1) in each Dc around, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 4. (20 Dc, 20 Ch 1 sps)

Row 3: Sl st into Ch 1 sp, Ch 4 = Dc + Ch 1, Dc in same sp, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc = Vst) in each Ch 1 sp around, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 4, fasten off, change color. (20 Vsts)

Row 4: With new color, join in Ch 1 sp of previous Rnd, Ch 5 = Dc + Ch 2, Dc in same sp, (Dc, Ch 2, Dc) in each Ch 1 sp around, join in 3rd Ch of beg ch 5. (20Vsts)

Row 5: Sl st into Ch 2 sp, Ch 3 = Dc, (Dc, Ch 1, 2 Dc) in same sp, (2 Dc, Ch 1, 2 Dc = sh) in each Ch 2 sp around, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 5. (20 Sh)

Row 6: Sl st into next dc, Sl st into Ch 2 sp, Ch 3 = Dc, (Dc, Ch 2, 2 Dc) in same sp, (2 Dc, Ch 2, 2 Dc) in each Ch 1 sp around, fasten off, change color. (20 Sh)

Row 7: With next color, join in Ch 2 sp, Ch 3 = Dc, (Dc, Ch 3, 2 Dc) in same sp, (2 Dc, Ch 3, 2 Dc) in each Ch 2 sp around, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 3. (20 Sh)

Row 8: Sl st in dc, Sl st in Ch 3 sp, Ch 3 = Dc, Dc 8 x’s in same sp, *(2 Dc, ch 2, 2 Dc) in next Ch 3 sp, 9 Dc in next Ch 3 sp*, repeat * to * around, finishing with Sh, fasten off, change color. (10 Sh, 10-9 Dc clusters)

Row 9: With starting color, join in 1st Dc of 9 Dc, Ch 3 = Dc, Dc in each of next 8 Dc, *(2 Dc, pic, 2 Dc) in next Ch 2 sp, Dc in each of next 9 Dc*, repeat * to * around, ending with pic/Sh, join in 3rd Ch of beg Ch 3, fasten off. Weave ends. Wash and block.

*Magic ring:
Holding yarn between thumb and first 2 fingers on left hand, wrap yarn around first 2 fingers so yarn falls to the back and furthest away from you, insert hook between these 2 fingers and under the top strand, grab second strand next to it with your hook and pull yarn through the loop. Make a chain and begin the pattern, working in the circle around tail of yarn.  For closing, untwist the tail from the loop, join before pulling tightly closed, pull gently but firmly, closing slack in the center circle.

Updates to pattern are;

*** Do 9 Dc in place of 10 Dc on last 2 rows. This leaves less bunching to lay flatter on finished doily. You may leave 10 Dc, it works just as well, I do it both ways depending on the size hook and yarn used.

Second update; Try different yarns and hooks for different sizes and feels. Original pattern uses size L hook giving the finished project a softer feel with the loosely crocheted stitches. The smaller your hook, the stiffer and smaller your finished project will be.

Pictures 2 & 3; Hobby Lobby, "I Love This Cotton!", 100% cotton with J hook, red, white and blue, yields 11 inches. 1 & 4 picture; Hobby Lobby's "I love this yarn!" Cranberry, Ivory and Dark Navy, with L hook, yields 13 inches.
