Cathleen's Food Page

in Cathleen's Kitchen

It seems that some people are very protective of their recipes. This is understandable, recipes are like a pattern, in that it is your own special process of steps that leads to a certain something, that only you may know exactly how you made it.

Yet it is so sad to me, when someone dies, and even sadder with they die with their secrets that are never again shared. When instead, they could live on through their recipes in others cooking.

My Grandmother was a fantastic cook, everyone loved her cooking. But she was also very protective of her 'secret recipes'. When I was given the opportunity, I rose to the occasion and embraced my new role cooking for my family, and she still rarely shared more than a store bought cook book.

In the early days of my cooking, we would have Holiday dinners at our house, and I would make all the 'fixin's', usual those attending were not fans of cooking themselves, so they didn't mind that I wanted to make everything. Though I was so excited to share, when my exGrandmother-in-law, (whom had actually been a great inspiration for my cooking, along with my Grandmother) was able to attend. When I would visit my Grandmother,  she was very proud that I was cooking, and even let me help in her kitchen with prep, and to make my special dishes that she had not yet tried.

But she would role over in her grave knowing that I shared recipes. Especially that I gave her recipe to her ex-in-laws, (oops, before I knew better).  But as I said, I would rather see them live on, be shared, and loved, and in this way the person lives on in memory through their food. Rather than never being shared, and enjoyed ever again.

In HONOR of my Grandmother, the first recipe I would like to share is not her Copper Carrots. I have made those several Thanksgivings, and Christmas', and they were always a hit.

If you are here and seeing this, consider yourself special and lucky, and thanks for stopping by.

As for sharing Momol's recipes, πŸ™πŸ» She can share when we meet again ❤️

One of the Holiday favorite around our house, I have been making since I first began cooking, is my Tortilla Soup.

Tortilla Soup

Chicken Poblano Soup is a fabulously simple, yet delicious soup.

Hamburger Soup, easy, delicious, and low cost. But takes hours to cook.

Homemade Sushi, HEB Firecracker Roll copycat. Sheesh, why couldn't I like sushi as much as my family? The families first pick for all things including special food, my last pick.

Falafels and Gyro. YUMMY, but long process.

Press into 9 in loaf pan

Salmon Patties better than sushi :)
Cooked fish in several forms; grilled, baked, fried, yum!

Yelena's Pea Salad, my version. A Russian Pea Salad called Olivier,  ΡΠ°Π»Π°Ρ‚ ОливьС.

Potato Skins

Holiday Fruit Turkey

Candy Corn Cake

Cat Cake

Thank you for stopping by.
Best wishes, and happy cooking!
